Rub a few drops of mustard oil between your palms. Pure oil releases a strong, natural pungent smell and leaves no color on the skin. If it feels overly greasy, gives off a chemical-like odor, or leaves color, it may be adulterated. Slight eye or throat irritation is normal with genuine mustard oil.
Refrigerate a small amount of mustard oil for 3–4 hours. Pure mustard oil stays mostly liquid or thickens slightly, while adulterated oil forms white spots or solid patches due to the presence of palm or refined oils.
Mix equal parts of mustard oil and nitric acid and shake gently. Pure mustard oil shows no color change, while adulterated oil may turn orange, yellow, or red, indicating contaminants like Argemone oil or other chemicals.
